Sickle cell disease is the most common hereditary blood disorder in the world. In sickle cell disease, the red blood cells, which are normally round, are sickle-shaped, or resemble a crescent moon. hence the name sickle cell disease. Characteristics of the disease are severe anemia, excruciating pain attacks and an increased risk of serious infections. Over time, the organs in the body are irreparably damaged. Worldwide, approximately thirty million people suffer from sickle cell disease. children are added every year. Without treatment, 75% of these children will not live beyond the age of five. There are also thousands of patients in the Netherlands who need treatment. they can potentially be cured through stem cell transplantation or gene therapy. Scientific research is very important for this. Unfortunately, sickle cell disease is relatively unknown, meaning there are not enough resources available to conduct much-needed, groundbreaking research.
